Stalemate (2 out of 2)
Stalemate (2 out of 2)
So the reason why this year ended is a stalemate is because I haven’t the foggiest idea of what to do next. When the hiring freeze was announced in April/May/June, I hadn’t achieved full certification despite passing all my CST’s (Content Service Tests) and the LAST (Liberal Arts Science Test) and the ATS-W (Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written) all in one shot; albeit all with flying colors. And yet, people who have failed several times can teach because they are eligble for the Transitional B license (which is granted by those in programs like the Teaching Fellows or Teach for America.) So why not go for a Trans. B license? Well, because I have teaching experience those programs seem to systematically rule me out. I’ve known people who are “career changers” who don’t know the ass end of child from a frying pan, yet, they have qualified for the job. The job which they’ve taken because more than likely their previous career have A. beccome stagnant with potential B. was futile or c. the industry is suffering due to the economy. However, people like me who sub, who take time, and who can’t see their life any other way than teaching, well we are relagated to this.
I mean I live in NYC. I like food and water, and shelter, and yes, I would like to go back to school, but I’ve already committed myself to this thing. This thing that is just a paycheck to others. And with Bloomberg raging and rampaging about mayoral control, who knows exactly how long the hiring freeze will be? A year? Two? Even still this year I have 2 friends who were excessed at their school because they taught “secondary” subjects. Two good teachers. It’s discouraging. As I said, I love teaching. Not the thrill of all eyes on me, but the idea that someone actually hears me, and that I can influence lives. I remember most of my teachers and proffessors because of the neglect or their general non-abilty to make rye toast seem once buttered. Ive had amazing teachers fail me in my life, and I set out to not be a few of them, and so I learned from their mistakes, and for all my hardwork, I’m a substitute still. Granted I’ve made priority list for a few schools, but well, it’s summer now.
A few most posts coming soon that I owe you guys. Sorry.
